Your Town, Your Future
Newent is a great place to live, and if we all work together there is no doubt that it can become a thriving, sustainable 21st-century rural market town.
But right now our future is under threat from development plans which, if they go ahead, will overwhelm our infrastructure, encroach on our countryside, and destroy much of what makes Newent such a special place to live, work and visit.
Future Newent is a community action group set up to help give Newent residents a chance to play a more active part in shaping our town’s future. And the first step, as we see it, is getting the views of Newent residents heard loud and clear by our planning authority.
The Forest of Dean District Council draft Local plan aims for the rapid expansion we have seen lately to continue to 2041.
The District Council is proposing a major strategic development to the South East of Newent, with 600 homes, a new school, out of town shops and the GP’s surgery relocated from the town centre.
All on around 120 of the best farmland in the country.
Is this the right future for Newent? Maybe you would welcome the expansion, maybe you think we’ve grown enough in recent years, and more is not sustainable.
